Salivary Testing

At Sedation & Implant Dentistry we believe that dentistry has expanded beyond the mouth. The link between the oral condition and the whole body are evident. We believe that patients should be actively aware of what is going on in their body and mouth and know that each and every patient is unique in their needs. We are now offering salivary testing for patients. The tests can help us better understand your condition; such as periodontal disease, better treat you individually and overall give you more insight into the oral systemic connection. Oral healthcare is just as important as whole body healthcare and the mouth truly can be a “window” to the body.

In the dental profession, and in life in general, I think that this is a very important thought. This is not just a job, even a career, it is a lifestyle. Caring for people is a way of life. I have been working in the dental profession for over 10 years now and I will truly say that it has been a wonderful journey. I have met so many patients throughout the years and have been able to form relationships that exceed the realm of “ all professional”. My goal and the goal that I have instilled in my team  is to make sure that you feel cared for and realize that you are not just a chart, a nameless patient. You are a part of our practice, and we would be nothing without each and every one of you.

Vitamin D deficiencies in up to 61% of North Americans…

With all the processed foods , with minimum sunlight in northern states , with some genetic and  racial characteristics , we are just not receiving enough of the essential vitamins and minerals to function properly, especially when considering Vitamin D.   A recent commentary in a prominent Journal of Orthopedic Surgery, suggested the vitamin D testing be accomplished and any insufficiency or deficiencies be treated prior to surgery. Orthopedic surgeons are dealing with soft tissue wound healing and bone healing, the same mechanisms as oral surgery healing. Oral Cancer Month

Oral cancer includes mouth, tongue, tonsil and throat cancers. The incidence of new diagnosis continues to increase in the US and worldwide. The pathways to oral cancer include the use of tobacco and alcohol and exposure to the HPV-16 virus (human papilloma virus version 16). This virus is also one confirmed pathway for cervical cancer in women. Genetic predisposition can also contribute to oral cancer, but it is not as common of a cause.

In the US, there are about 100 new cases diagnosed daily and the death rate is around one person per hour. Oral cancer is not a rare thing. One of the biggest concerns is that diagnosis is often times in the later stages of oral cancer. The key is awareness; What are the symptoms, what can it look like,  and are you at risk??? The other key is early screening and regular examination from your dental professional.

As an added service for our patients, Sedation & Implant Dentistry is now offering OraRisk HPV testing. This type of test screens for several types of HPV that have been known to cause abnormal pathology and certain oral cancers. The test will help us in identifying what HPV strains you may have been exposed to and the risk category that you would fall in to.

We also offer MyPerioPath bacterial screening, which helps identify gum disease causing bacteria, and MyPerioID genetic testing for periodontal disease. We as a practice believe in the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment modalities. We want to make sure that we are delivering the best care and that we are staying current on emerging problems that affect our patients and their families.
